This is the character called Art Spiegelman, and it’s only as his father’s story unfolds that we begin to understand why the two-page prelude about him is there. ![]() ![]() Alongside the ever more shocking atrocities of the Holocaust narrative runs another, to do with the complete lack of understanding of the son born years afterwards. What’s impressed me about it so far is how Spiegelman has found a new way of doing personal history that is complex and constantly surprising. The thought didn’t just cross my mind, it was the simple assumption I made. ![]() People (like me) who know about it but haven’t read it would assume it won because of the subject matter, the wholesale murder of Polish Jews by the Nazis. Chapters 1-3 of Part 1, My Father Bleeds HistoryĮven only a quarter of the way into it, you can see why this book was in contention for the Pulitzer Prize-which it won in 1992, after the publication of Part 2. ![]()
